August 10th Bike Ride with iMapMyRide

iMapMyRide LogoI like biking. I have never been a runner. I hate how it makes my legs and in particular ankles and knees feel. Cycling on the other hand has always felt more fluid and I like the speed and feeling of being on a bike.

Trouble is I don’t go out nearly as much as I should. I’m aiming to fix that though, and went on what I hope to be the first of many rides happening every few days, if not more. The route I took was down the Greenway to the World Trade Center and back, roughly a 12 mile ride.

I had a headache so I decided to get some fresh air to see if that would help. Adding a ride to the mix, I figured, would get my blood flowing, so maybe that would also help. They did help for their part, but it later developed into a migraine which I have again today, but no biggie. The ride was really enjoyable. I suited myself up with my iPhone on an armstrap and booted up the iMapMyRide app (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/imapmyride-cycling-bicycling/id292223170?mt=8).

This is an app I downloaded a long, long time ago and never really used until just recently. It’s actually pretty cool as it logs your entire ride (or run if you’re so inclined) on a Google map and keep stats like how long the ride took, how far and a bunch of other little stats in-between. When you’re done you can share your route with Twitter or Facebook and check it out in detail on your profile page on the mapmyride.com site.

They offer multiple map options but one that I thought was really cool was a 3D flyover of the ride which I will post below. I’m always impressed by Google maps tech, but this was a fun way to relive the ride and see it from a different perspective. It’s not perfectly accurate, in part because I don’t think it understand’s there’s a bike path there and it’s trying to put me on the nearby roads instead. But it’s close enough.

(If you can’t view it, you may need to download the Google Earth plug-in. It should provide a link to do so.)

Anyway, I want to tackle more rides and maybe post more of them here in the future, but check out my route and my MapMyRide profile here: https://www.mapmyride.com/profile/plabrozzi, and download the app if you’re into cycling. I will warn you it is a battery eater, so head out with a full charge. Enjoy!

2010 Challenge Update – March 19, 2010 – Weight GAIN Friday :(

I guess it had to happen sooner or later. As the title of the post says, this is the first Friday of the diet where I weighed more than the previous week. Oh well… Let’s do this thing…

Challenge #2: Lose weight on the South Beach Diet.
Current weight:
193.1
Current BMI:
27.04
Weight loss from start:
-40.6 lbs.
Progress:
Clearly last week’s hopeful prediction of making this the week to hit 190, was off. There’s clear reasons why I failed this week. Of highest note was eating out two nights in a row. It’s just too hard to stick to the diet when you’re out with friends at places like China Fun and Gus and Gabriel’s Gastropub. And another factor was bad timing every night leading to only 1 or 2 gym stops.

At least the gain was not so significant as to negate a lot of progress. Last Friday I was at 192.7 meaning I’ve only gained 0.4 lbs from last week. I did get as low as 192, but didn’t break it, so its also not like I got down to 190 then came back up. Overall I’m not surprised or really that upset about it. I’ll just make the effort to curb it this new week and try to jump start it again.

I debated going back to phase 1 for the week, but think I’m just going to focus on phase 2 eating but really making sure I don’t bend the rules at all.

On a positive note I have ridden my bike to and from work the past few days and am excited to keep that up. We will be putting our gym membership on hold once the weather is really nice enough to be able to work out outside.

2010 Challenge Update – March 12, 2010 – Weight Loss Friday!

How do you follow up on the worst week of your diet? How about making the next week a lot better? That’s what I did. Ohhhh yeaaaahhhh…

Challenge #2: Lose weight on the South Beach Diet.
Current weight:
192.7
Current BMI:
26.98 (need to doublecheck, have been bad about remembering these lately)
Weight loss from start:
-41.0 lbs.
Progress:
I’m happy to say that I have stepped off my roller coaster ride (at least for now). This week with little exception has been back on the downward trend. I’ve been eating properly, cheating extremely little and exercising aplenty. That’s how I’ve managed to hit another fantastic milestone; over 40lbs. lost since start. In fact, as of today its 41… but who’s counting?
