New feature: The PeteCast eNewsletter

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Hello all, a quick note about a cool new feature to the PeteCast.

I have been making a push to try and post lots of fun content on the site. In the future this will only expand. I have been doing my best as well to get the word out there about the PeteCast. I set up recently a feature that automatically posts an alert on Facebook when new posts are made. With these alerts showing up both from me and to fans of the PeteCast there has been a fantastic raise in traffic.

However, I know I can do better. So I am happy to announce the addition of the PeteCast eNewsletter! You can read more about it by visiting the eNewsletter link in the right side column or by clicking here.

By signing up for the eNewsletter you will receive as-it-happens alerts or weekly/monthly recaps (you can change these options in your eNewsletter preferences). This way you can stay up to date with all the happenings of the PeteCast and be the first to know about new articles and features.

As always, please let your friends know and thanks so much for reading!

Site update – Mobile Browsing Support

Monday, January 25th, 2010

In today’s world of gadgets on the go, it was inevitable that I’d make this update sooner or later. Basically, this update adds support for viewing the PeteCast blog on your touch mobile devices such as: iPhone, iPod touch, Android, or the BlackBerry Storm. You could of course view it on those already perfectly fine, but this seeks to improve that experience by giving you a specific mobile-attuned version reminiscent of iPhone apps.

The best part is you can choose to view it in this mobile format or the regular format just by clicking on the “Mobile Theme – On/Off” toggle at the bottom of the page. If you end up on the regular version of the site, you can just as easily jump back to the mobile theme by using the same toggle, again at the bottom of the page.

WHOA! Another site update! Improved Registration/Login

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

I know right? Two website updates in the same day? Well this one is really cool.

You can now register and sign in to the PeteCast site by linking with your accounts from Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Google, Yahoo or AOL.

This will make registering and signing in so ridiculously easy for you, its not even funny. It works by taking your name and email from whichever of those 6 accounts you choose and using that to sign you up automatically here. Once you have linked the accounts you can still edit your profile, choose an avatar of your liking and more.

If you prefer, you can still sign up the old fashioned way. On the login page, below the buttons you will see an option, “Or, sign in with a password” which will guide you through the regular way of logging in.

In lieu of this change and how easy it is to sign up, I have changed comments to only be available to those who have registered by one of these means.

Try it now it takes mere seconds! Click “Log in” at the top right of the page under the “Register/Login” header, or click the image of the 6 options above.

Enjoy!

Small site update – user avatars

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to drop a quick note about a small site update I’ve made. When commenting on a post you will notice that once your comment is posted there is a place for a user avatar inside your comment box. For most of you, it will look like this:

That is a default supplied by a site called Gravatar which works with WordPress. You can create an account there and upload an avatar but to make it much more simple, I have added the ability for you to upload your own avatar right to this site.

Here’s the catch though. You need to be a registered member of the PeteCast. But thats also great because I would love to have you as a registered member! It only takes a moment to sign up, so go for it now. You can sign up using the link at the top right side of this page called, “Login” under the “Register/Login” heading (obvious, huh?)

Or, you can click this link:

Register for the PeteCast

Registering allows you to fill out a user profile (if you so choose), add an avatar and will allow you to comment on all posts with your information always remembered. That way you don’t have to type it all back in each time you come by. It’ll also allow me to better be in contact with you down the road and give me a sense of who and how many people are reading/listening. So please do sign up, and perhaps one lucky registrant will get a cookie.

Thanks!

Introducing: The all new PeteCast blog version 2.0

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

OK, for any of you who have frequented my blog throughout time and have a sharp eye you are looking around this page and saying, “Yea it’s a little different but still mostly looks the same”. Well you’d of course be right. I use the term “all new” but thats a little bit of a stretch. All of the same old blog content is here, and for the most part so is the look and style of the old version minus a few nicer styling tweaks.

No, instead the biggest and most important change you’ll spot on this page however, is in your browser’s address bar. You are now reading this post at “petecast.com”.

“How is this different!?”, you may ask while starting to feel exacerbated.

First, take this moment to update your bookmarks or favorites, I’ll wait (tip: hitting control+D is easiest). Now that you’ve done that, it’s different because up until this very moment you’ve been reading all these thoughtful posts on “petecast.libsyn.com”.

Small change, right? WRONG! This is a HUGE change. Let me explain…
