Best of the Commercial Bowl 2010!

February 8th, 2010 by Pete Labrozzi

I am not a big football fan. The only time I ever watch a game is usually the Superbowl, and even then I tend to pay much more attention to the commercials than the actual game. (Though I am happy for the Saints, go you!)

This year was no different. I spent most of the night watching Law & Order reruns and playing Mass Effect 2. Occasionally we’d tune in to see what was going on and had the impeccable timing of flipping back right before the halftime show featuring, The Who.

Funny thing about The Who… I hate that song, “Who Are You?”.  And for some reason it’s the only song I’ve ever associated with, The Who. Come to find out they have a ton of other epic music. Songs that I love, that I had no idea they sung. Turns out I like The Who. Go fig.

I digress, on to the commercials…

So I didn’t see any commercials in my short times checking back that caught my interest, so I perused them on YouTube today since they usually post all, or at least most of them.

I have to say, I am very disappointed. It seems like all the fun and creative writing this year was gone. Nothing was really inspired, most was just weird old ideas with maybe a slightly different twist. Anyway, here’s the best of the best in my opinion. (Or best of the worst for that matter)

The winners:

Bud Light was my clear winner this year. Out of several commercials they entered came these two with clear references to LOST. While that gives them bonus points, I also love the bait and switch in both. Both start off with a very serious problem, mimicking so many big-budget movies and TV shows these days. But then instead of doing anything about their problem, they just go nuts. I’m not a drinker, but it still cracks me up and serious props for including François Chau a.k.a. LOST’s Pierre Chang in the first one.

Bud Light’s Stranded

My second place award goes to Doritos for their short but zany commcercials. Like Bud Light they had more entries than what I am listing here, but these stood out. Both brought a smile to my face and thats what counts. The first is awesome because a guy gets a Dorito thrown like a ninja star into his neck by another guy who is dressed up in a suit of Dorito samurai armor. That’s almost enough to take the first prize right off the bat. The second is a joke thats been done a ton of times before, but the guy is such a royal d.b. for trying to get that dog to bark that it was exceptionally great when the dog snuck up, garrote wired him with the collar and started barking.

Doritos’ Snack Attack Samurai
Doritos’ Underdog

While my third place pick is a trailer and not exactly a commercial, it still gets the bronze because it’s the freaking Griswolds! I haven’t seen the full short movie yet, but I need to make a point to do so, it looks fantastic.

Honorable mentions:

This first one by coke was just a fun commercial. Anything with the simpsons is usually good, but something about it brings a grin to your face.

Coke’s Hard Times

Its a fiddling Beaver. Come on. Obviously this was getting a nod from me. The best part is he smacks his tail to keep the rhythm instead of his foot. Classic.

Monster.com’s Fiddling Beaver

This one was just very cute. I know its mushy and sentimental, but I thought it was clever and it made me smile.

Google’s Parisian Love

I am giving this one my last honorable mention simply because it included internet memes like the Numa Numa Guy and the Dramatic Look Gopher. But this is a trend that has started to become way overdone. The last good use of it was in one of Weezer’s last music videos. Now its just getting ridiculous. This is the last time I want to see it. The effects were pretty cool though, so I have to give it some credit for that as well.

VIZIO’s FORGE

The clear loser:

This commercial was total crap. It starts off really cool with some futuristic looking cars and guys including a crazy little guy wielding a pair of pneumatic wrenches. And yet, ends so dissappointingly with what may have been the dumbest joke in commercial history. See for yourself.

That’s all for this Commercial Bowl. See you next year!
